02 Mar Under Armour Signs Dutch Footballer Memphis Depay
Under Armour has signed Memphis Depay, one of the most promising young footballers in the world, to an endorsement deal. The winger, currently the leading goal scorer in the Dutch Eredivisie, starts his multiyear partnership with the brand immediately.
“On and off the pitch I’m always ready for the next chapter in my life,” said Memphis. “I wanted Under Armour in my corner because they will help me elevate my game until I reach my dreams. I’m going to help Under Armour bring the impact they’ve had in American Football, Basketball and sport performance to the football pitch.”
Having just turned 21, the PSV Eindhoven winger was a breakout star at last summer’s World Cup where he became the youngest-ever Dutch player to score in the tournament. He followed his memorable performance on the world’s biggest sporting stage with a stellar season in the Netherlands. Memphis, with his world-class pace and clinical finishing, has established himself as one of the most sought after players in the game. In 2014-15 he’s netted 21 goals in all competitions and leads the Eredivisie with 15 goals.
“Memphis is one of the World’s best young footballers and is a great addition to our brand’s elite athlete roster,” said Peter Murray, VP, global brand and sports marketing, Under Armour. “His star continues to rise and we’re excited to help him reach new heights with our innovative footwear, apparel and digital training tools. He’s only 21, but has proven that his explosive and fast style of play combined with his unrelenting will to be great gives him the potential to be a game-changer. We look forward to working together with Memphis to inspire the next generation of footballers for years to come.”
Starting Mar. 1, Memphis will wear a soon to be released Under Armour football boot in all matches and training. In addition to being featured in future global brand marketing initiatives he will collaborate closely with the brand’s design teams on the development of boots, apparel and equipment for football.
In 2011 Under Armour became the official technical outfitter for Tottenham Hotspur of the Barclays Premier League. The brand also has technical partnerships with Colo- Colo, 30-time champions of the Chilean Primera Division, Toluca who are 8-time champions of the Mexican Primera Division and 8-time winners of the Mexican Primera Division, Cruz Azul.
US International Jermaine Jones joined the Under Armour athlete roster in 2014. Along with Jones, Memphis joins a roster that includes 2013 Wimbledon Champion Andy Murray, NBA All-Star Stephen Curry, Super Bowl XLIX MVP Tom Brady and the most decorated female alpine World Cup skier in history, Lindsey Vonn.
