Amazon joins ranks of top 10 retailers, McDonald’s falls off

July 03–Amazon.com has cracked the top 10 in Stores magazine’s annual ranking of the 100 largest U.S. retailers, a first for an online-only retailer.

With domestic sales up 27 percent between 2012 and 2013 to $44 billion, Amazon.com muscled its way from the No. 11 spot to No. 9, pushing past Safeway, which stepped down a rung to No. 10, and McDonalds, which fell to No. 11 for U.S. sales.

Most of the other retailers in the top 10 were stable from last year, with Wal-Mart leading the pack with $334.3 billion in domestic sales and Kroger following at a distance with $93.6 billion. Costco nudged past Target to assume third place.

“Notable as [Amazon’s rise] is, brick and mortar retailers are keeping pace by continuously reinventing themselves to better serve today’s anytime, anywhere shopper,” STORES editor Susan Reda said in a news release from the National Retail Federation.

The annual ranking was compiled for Stores Media by Kantar Retail and sponsored by Island Pacific and NEC.
