Kohl’s kicks off holiday hiring season

The holiday hiring rush is on, and Kohl’s Department Stores was first among the large retailers to announce plans to expand the workforce to handle the crush of holiday shopping.

Kohl’s will bring on 50,000 workers nationwide this season to handle in-person retail and online fulfillment. The company did not say exactly how many people in Florida would be hired, but company officials did say the average is about 40 per store, and Kohl’s has 10 stores in the Tampa/St. Petersburg/Lakeland area and a total of 53 stores in the state of Florida.

In addition, the company anticipates hiring approximately 6,400 seasonal positions at distribution centers across the country and approximately 350 seasonal credit operations positions.

“These additional associates will help us provide an enjoyable and convenient shopping experience to our valued customers,” said Michelle Gass, Kohl’s chief customer officer.

Major retailers like Home Depot, Macy’s, Sears and JCPenneys all typically make similar announcements about brigning on more workers for the holiday season. Lately, one of the biggest expansions comes from the other side of the retail world: Amazon.

As for Kohl’s, new seasonal workers can work anywhere from a few hours to more than 20 hours per week, and typical jobs include unloading trucks, freight processing, stocking and cash register duties. Hiring began this month, and most jobs will be filled by mid-November.
