28 Nov Shoe drive buys new athletic shoes for needy students
Corsicana Independent School District is hosting a shoe drive this holiday season through Dec. 11 at the administration building, 60 N.13th St.
It’s a simple thought: Kids should have a good pair of athletic shoes to do the things that young kids do so well — run, jump, play.
Last year, this led to the collection of 171 pairs of new shoes being distributed to kids in need.
“We never imagined that the community would respond in such a generous way,” said Susan Johnson, executive director of Public Relations for CISD.
Already, principals and counselors are compiling lists of students who won’t be getting much for the 2013 holiday break. Shoes are high on the needs list, along with food.
Seventy-four percent of the students in Corsicana ISD come from economically disadvantaged homes. Serving children in a low-wealth district has its challenges.
It’s during the fall and winter breaks that Coach Heath Autrey has led the district in a large-sale effort to bring assistance to families in need.
“Every year, people ask how they can help,” Autrey said. “I know the shoe donations help so much. I work with the kids at Navarro Elementary in PE classes. It would thrill some of them to have a new pair of shoes.”
Donors with a preference are welcome to stop by the administration building on North 13th Street to identify a grade, school or shoe size to purchase a pair of shoes for a student in need.
Donations of new shoes or money to buy new shoes are welcome. Collections are due by Dec. 11.
“We want students to have good self-esteem and come prepared to learn when they come to school. A good pair of shoes impacts a student’s confidence level tremendously,” Johnson said. “We certainly welcome anyone willing to contribute.”

The CISD Holiday Drive is a district-wide effort to bring help and comfort to children in the district to ensure a safe and happy holiday season. Help includes food, shoes, gifts and clothing.
