16 Oct Sperry Top-Sider Debuts Clothing Line, Giving Us Something To Wear Our Boat Shoes With
Sperry Top-Sider boat shoes are a favorite of the preppy Northeastern set, a group once symbolized by the Kennedys and now more often represented by college guys sporting salmon-colored shorts and Martha’s Vineyard tees.
Now boat shoe-loving prepsters will have more options when it comes to their clothes on top: Sperry Top-Sider is debuting a clothing line. The company will unveil men’s and women’s apparel collections for fall this Thursday, Women’s Wear Daily reports, rounding out its current offering of swimwear, hats, gloves, scarves, sunglasses, socks, hosiery and, of course, shoes.
The clothing, to be produced by LF USA, veers sporty, with windbreakers, chunky knit sweaters and stretchy knits. The colors? Just as you’d expect: lots of nautical navy and red and white, plus shots of brights like green and orange. “We envision it as a lifestyle brand,” Sperry president Craig Rheingold, told WWD, “but we need apparel to complete the package and bring the brand to life.”
Someone might have informed him that that apparel already existed in the form of Vineyard Vines and the aforementioned Martha’s Vineyard regalia, not to mention J. Crew. But hey, who couldn’t use an extra pair of lobster-embroidered shorts?
