SSI Data: Back-to-School Athletic Footwear Sales Pick Up In Peak Week

Athletic footwear sales in the four-week back-to-school season-to-date were essentially flat.

The market can use some good news after a rough morning on Friday.

Sales of athletic footwear at retail picked up last week, posting a low-single-digit increase in what is historically the peak week for athletic footwear sales during the back-to school selling period in the U.S market. The only larger weeks are seen in the lead-up to Christmas.

According to data compiled by SSI Data, athletic footwear sales in the four-week back-to-school season-to-date were essentially flat with three down weeks leading up to the most recent week’s reporting. The kids’ athletic footwear business was a bit weaker in the four-week period but posted mid-single-digit growth in the peak week.

The Top Sellers chart for kids’ athletic footwear features many models that will not surprise but also saw some new product in the mix this year, like the Adidas Kids’ Baseline, which was new to the market last year and took the No. 6 spot this year.

One model that is always of importance to highlight is the Converse All-Stars kids’ models as many are sold to women in the larger sizes.
