Walmart Acquires Moosejaw

Walmart has acquired Moosejaw, a leading online outdoor retailer, for approximately $51 million.

The acquisition closed on February 13, 2017. Walmart, in an attempt to better compete with online giant, commented that buying Moosejaw gives it “the experience of another well-established e-commerce player, this time in the active outdoor category,” said a company representative.

Moosejaw has a large web presence, as well as 10 physical stores. It carries more than 400 brands, including Patagonia, The North Face, Marmot and Arc’teryx, and offers an assortment of apparel and gear for climbing, hiking, camping, snow sports, yoga, swimming and biking.

Moosejaw was founded in 1992 in Michigan and is headquartered in Madison Heights, MI. The outdoor retailer will continue to operate its site and stores as it has in the past.

Moosejaw CEO Eoin Comerford, his executive team and Moosejaw’s 350-plus employees will continue to be based in Michigan.

Walmart also acquired ShoeBuy last month for approximately $70 million to add to its online marketplace, which it purchased last year for $3 billion in cash plus $300 million in stock. It will report its fourth-quarter earnings on Tuesday, February 21.
